When to Redesign Your Org Chart (and How to Do It Right)

When to Redesign Your Org Chart (and How to Do It Right)

As your business grows, the structure that once worked starts to break down. People wear too many hats. Responsibilities overlap. Decisions stall. That’s usually a sign it’s time to update your Results Ownership Chart (Previously known as an Org Chart) —not to match your people, but to match your next stage of growth.

What Is an Results Ownership Chart?

It’s not an org chart. It doesn’t show who reports to whom—it shows what needs to get done and who owns it. It’s about clarity, not hierarchy.

Signs Your Results Ownership Chart Needs a Redesign

How to Redesign It the Right Way

1. Design for the Business You’re Becoming
Start by asking: “What does this business need to look like at $7M, or $50M?” Don’t build around your current team—build around the right seats.

2. Focus on Functions, Not People
Every major function of the business should have a clearly defined seat with one owner. Think Sales, Marketing, Ops, Finance, HR, etc.

3. One Seat = One Owner
If two people “kind of” own something, no one owns it. Every seat should have clear outcomes and one accountable person.

4. Share It and Walk the Team Through It
Roll it out in a leadership meeting and clarify expectations. This isn’t about demotion or promotion—it’s about clarity and growth.
